                                FAQs about Rice Lake

What is the Rice Lake Area Association?
Rice Lake Area Association (known as RLAA) is made up of residents who are either lakeshore/creekshore or lake view/creek view property owners around Rice Lake. Members are asked to pay dues to the association to help cover the cost for maintenance and enhancements on the lake. Since there is no public access on the lake, opportunities for funding from the state government (such as the DNR) are not always available.

Where is Rice Lake located?
Located in the northwest corner of Maple Grove, MN, near the intersection of I-94, I-494 and I-694, one of 7 lakes in the City of Maple Grove.

How large is Rice Lake?
The Minnesota DNR lists it as 314 acres surface area with max depth of 12 feet. Rice Lake is the 10th largest lake in Hennepin County.

Can I launch a boat at Rice Lake?
Small boats which do not require trailers (canoe, kayak, etc.) can be launched at these public locations:
    - The city park at Fernbrook and Country Road 30
     -  Rice Lake Circle (behind church on Rice Lake Road)

What is a Drawdown?
A drawdown is the natural practice of lowering a lake level to reduce unwanted vegetation, clean up the lake bottom, and conduct general clean up efforts. Rice Lake is well suited for a drawdown since the water flow can be controlled by the Elm Creek Dam, located southeast of the Maple Grove High School.

July 31, 2008 - Barley Straw bags placed in each of the 2 stormwater ponds on the east side of Rice Lake. Objective is to reduce the amount of nutrients which empties into the lake, leading to algae blooms. (Click here for photos and related info.)

July 25, 2008 - RLAA Board of Directors decided against pursing an algae treatment since the cost for treatment will exceed the funds we have available. If you know of a neighbor who should be paying their dues and are not, please encourage them to contribute. We need to increase our dues-paying membership to battle challenges like algae.

April 5, 2008 - Numerous dead fish have been located on the western side of the lake this past week, as the ice breaks apart. The DNR Fisheries department suspects they died due to the low levels of oxygen from the effects of a harsh winter (early ice with snow cover). Majority of those affected appear to be sunnies, crappies, and carp, although some northerns and bass were also sited. (To see a few pictures - click this link.)

March 2008 - Metal "dampers" were placed on the Rice Lake side of the culverts which connect to Fish Lake. These were recently installed by the City of Maple Grove with the intention of helping stabilize the Fish Lake water levels after significant rain events (since Rice Lake receives so much more input from the watershed, it's waters backwash into Fish Lake on occassion. These "dampers" will be used to help control those exceptional rain events for the Fish Lake residents. (Click here to see image1 and image 2)

November 4 - Reminder that there will be no drawdown conducted this winter. Drawdowns are done on Rice Lake only when non-native plants are an issue. This season the non-native plant population has been low.

October 31 - Navigation buoy removed from Stonehenge Island for the season.

October 6 - Floating weeds have moved out from the bridge and boats can now pass safely.

September 16 - Floating weeds blocking passage under I-94 bridge

October 28 - Navigational buoy removed from the lake for the season.

October 18 - Rice Lake submits request for funding from City of Maple Grove via the Lake Quality Commission for 2 projects (1 additional project will be funded by the City and another determined not necessary at the time). Go to 'Current Projects' tab for more information.
