Minnesota Water Quality "Did you knows…"

Over 100 square miles drain into Rice Lake through storm drains, Elm Creek, and natural

run-off. (Water quality can be controlled by those who live far from the rivers and lakes.

Please don't dump waste into storm drains.)

Phosphorous accelerates plant growth in water and on land. (Lake weeds will grow rapidly when

phosphorous is introduced into the ecosystem.)

Most soil in Minnesota does not need additional phosphorous. (Alternative no-phosphorous

fertilizers are available at most retailers such as Menards, Fleet Farm, Home Depot,

Bachman's, etc.)

The Minnesota legislature is working on a bill to prohibit sale or distribution of lawn

fertilizers containing phosphorous. (Contact your state representative/senator to voice your

concerns over the sale and application of these environment-damaging products)

Dishwashing detergents average 11% phosphorous by content. That phosphorous not only

hurts our water resources (i.e.: Washing your car in the driveway with dishwashing

detergent will enter the storm drain system) , but causes "etching" damage (surface

scratching) to glassware. (Look for low phosphorous or phosphorous-free dishwashing

products at your local retailer.)
