Rice Lake Rough Fish Removal project (Fall 2003)

Ken & Steve:

Just wanted to update you regarding our efforts to remove some of the carp from Rice Lake. As you can see, the many tree stumps proved to be a hazard for the fishermen to work the area. The fish were also too large to bring to his market.

Any other suggestions on how to "weed" them out of the lake would be much appreciated.

Thanks, George Schneider

Thanks for keeping us updated. Too bad they won't be able to remove the carp for us. Maybe we should entertain some other ideas for next year such as a Carp Fishing Contest for people who live on Rice Lake? If a 20-30 lb carp is not saleable, what do they do with them?? Fertilizer?

I spoke with Don yesterday. He was out last week and he concluded that too many stumps are in the lake for the seine nets used to remove carp. He said he tore up his nets pretty bad and does not want to continue with the carp. I think another part of it is he caught about 50-60 carp in the one pass when he didn't catch his nets on stumps and they were ALL between 20-30lbs each. The saleable ones should be under 10lbs. He mentioned that he did catch one monster pike that he put back. He plans on coming back in the Spring for some bullheads. A different kind of net is used on them, where the stumps shouldn't pose as big of a problem. A payment will be re-negotiated at that point.

I spoke again with Don Geyer a couple more times last night. He plans to start fishing today. His fees are $1000 plus 10 cents/lb. He plans to mainly fish carp now for a week or so and then in the Spring focus on bullheads. My understanding is that he will be feed areas with corn and then use a few hundred feet of seine netting this fall and hoop nets in the spring for the bullheads. All game fish will be immediately returned to the lake. Don said he will call in a couple days to give me a report in how it is going. If anyone happens to see him, it might be nice to capture a couple pictures.
thanks
